Government of NB wants to lock in the media

Editor's Note: The New Brunswick Government will be tabling their Budget, but it looks like it wants to control the media prior to its release.  I would suggest If they want to release it to the media then do so after it is tabled in the legislature, embargoes are only a courtesy if the public interest is served.  The actions of this government shows an intrenched view of controlling the media message.

The media should not be involved in these types of agreements from the governing power.

Press release issued by the Government of New Brunswick on March 27, 2015 regarding Budget Document release:

The media lock-in for the 2015-16 provincial budget will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in the Pointe Sainte-Anne Room at the Fredericton Convention Centre, 670 Queen St., Fredericton. Finance Minister Roger Melanson will hold a news conference at noon. The budget will be delivered in the legislative assembly at 1 p.m.

Entrance to the lock-in after 9 a.m. is permitted, however members of the media will not be permitted to leave after they arrive and all budget materials will be under embargo until Melanson delivers the budget speech in the legislative assembly.

Laptops will be permitted and plugs will be available. Mobile devices will be permitted in airplane mode only for photo, video, and recording purposes. No social media or other outside communication is permitted during the lock-in. Coffee and tea will be available. Lunch will be served.
